We will have our first day of school next Monday - August 4th. Some of the small people are more excited about that fact than others. I think I am the most excited of all of us. The first day of school holds so many possibilities: opportunities to have new beginnings, opportunities to learn new things (for the small people and for me), opportunities for me to correct mistakes I've made with small people in previous years LOL.
We have several beginning of the year traditions that we (or at least I) enjoy.
- New Supplies - At breakfast on the first day of school, I put new school supplies at each spot. Each of the small people get new notebooks, pencils, crayons, colored pencils, and any other supply they may need. For example, The Boy got a new calculator the year he took Pre-Algebra. In addition to school supplies, I give each of them a "fun" item - new Lego sets, coloring books, craft kits, and books have been the fun items in the past. It's like coming down on Christmas morning. Here is what it looked like a couple of years ago.
- Library Trip - Another first day of school favorite is our field trip to the library. There is no better way to kick off the school year than to encourage my small people to be readers.
- Special Lunch - After the field trip to the library, the small people and I go to meet Dad for lunch at a local restaurant. This is a special treat since we usually don't go out for lunch during the school year.
- Pictures - Yes, like traditional schoolers, we do the first day of school pictures, but without a backpack. I have them hold up something that says what grade they're in. It's fun to look at how they've grown from year to year.
Do you have any fun back-to-school traditions?
