Daddy, There's a Hippo in the Grapes

This year for the A to Z Challenge my theme is Children's Books Around the World. Each book either has a specific setting around the world or is about a world culture.

I've spent this year studying geography - countries and cultures - with the girls. One of the things I love about homeschooling is finding new books to read with my small people, especially ones that go along with what we're studying.

D is for Daddy, There's a Hippo in the Grapes by Lucy M. Dobkins

This book is set in Kenya and tells the story of a young boy named Ibrahim. He has a unique problem - his family's grape harvest is being eaten by hippos. He not only has to get rid of the hippos, but he has to convince his family that there actually ARE hippos in the vineyard.

I know my small people can come up will all kinds of reasons why they can't do their chores. (Although hippos haven't been one - yet. LOL)

Other D books around the world:
Picture Books
The Day Hans Got His Way by David Lewis Atwell

The Day of Ahmed's Secret by Florence Parry Heide and Judith Heide Gilliland

Chapter Books
The Diary of Ma Yan by Yan Ma

What's the most unusual excuse you've heard for not being able to do chores?
