The Hundred Dresses

This year for the A to Z Challenge my theme is Children's Books Around the World. Each book either has a specific setting around the world or is about a world culture.

I've spent this year studying geography - countries and cultures - with the girls. One of the things I love about homeschooling is finding new books to read with my small people, especially ones that go along with what we're studying.

B is for The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes
This Newberry Honor book is set in the United States, focusing on how a little Polish girl is treated by her classmates. Every day the other girls ridicule her for wearing the same faded blue dress to school. Wanda claims she has a hundred dresses at home in her closet, but the other girls know this can't be true and bully her. The girls feel bad when Wanda is pulled out of school because her father wants to leave this town where they are ridiculed for being Polish. One of the little girls especially regrets how she treated Wanda and vows to never again stand by silently when someone is teased.

I love the message shared in this book about bullying and about how being silent while bullying occurs makes you just as guilty as actively bullying.
