I love history, and I've been blessed with a few small people who also enjoy history. Living in South Carolina with its rich heritage, one of my favorite time periods is the Civil War. I was given the opportunity to review With Lee in Virginia, an audio theater CD set from Heirloom Audio Productions.
For this review, I received the Family Four-Pack which includes the 2-CD audio theater of With Lee in Virginia as well as access to several special bonuses including

With Lee in Virginia is a 2 1/2 hour audio theater drama depicting the book by G.A. Henty. The girls and I all hung out in the living room to listen and enjoy the story of fifteen year old Vincent as he joins the Army of Northern Virginia and fights in the Civil War. We listened as he fought alongside those famous Confederate generals Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and Robert E. Lee. I enjoyed how the story shared about General Lee's faith in God and the spiritual journey that Vincent took in determining how slavery and the owning of other people is wrong.
Because the story follows Vincent's journey as a soldier in the Confederate army, the story is told from the perspective of the Confederate side. I think it's important that history is told (and learned) from all sides, and this production shows that there were good and godly men fighting on the Confederate side. I loved how it shared how General Lee fought for the the Confederates, not because he valued slavery, but because he cared about states' rights. It taught my girls that not everyone who fought for the Confederates believed in slavery.
The downloadable study guide is a 52 page pdf file that includes
- Comprehension and critical thinking questions
- Vocabulary words
- Biographic sketches for G.A. Henty, General Robert E. Lee, and General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson
- List of sources about General Lee
- Bible studies on the themes of the story
I really enjoyed listening to With Lee in Virginia. Of course, with a cast that includes Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings), Kirk Cameron (Fireproof), Brian Blessed (Star Wars), Chris Anthony (Adventures in Odyssey), and Kelsey Lansdowne (Curious George), how could it not be fabulous?
Soccer Girl's Thoughts
I really liked how excited the boys were before they went off to war.
The story line was everything you would want in a story - tragedy, romance, adventure. There were parts where you just want to cry along with the character, and parts where you want to jump for joy because of the happiness of the moment.
Little Red's Thoughts
I liked that there was a happy ending even though the army Vincent was fighting for lost the war.
My favorite part was when Vincent broke out of jail because he wanted to get back out to the field to fight for their cause.
I've also reviewed another title from Heirloom Audio Productions. You can read my review of In Freedom's Cause here.
