The Cat of Bubastes is an audio theater drama depicting the book by G.A. Henty. Ballerina had to read The Cat of Bubastes for one of her literature books this fall so this was perfect timing for us. After she finished reading the book, she listened to the audio drama.

The Cat of Bubastes is the story of a prince named Amuba, who is captured by the Egyptians after his father is killed in battle. He becomes a slave for a high priest where he befriends the son of the priest. When the priest's son accidentally kills the cat of Bubastes, Amuba flees with the priest's son back to Amuba's homeland.

Ballerina really enjoyed the end of the book and audio drama because it showed how Amuba's life came together.

The downloadable study guide is 47-page pdf file that includes
  • Comprehension and critical thinking questions
  • Vocabulary words
  • Biographical sketches of G.A. Henty and Moses
  • Informational passages entitled "Expand Your Learning"
  • List of sources about Ancient Egypt
  • Bible studies based on themes in the book
  • Historical background for The Cat of Bubastes
I love that the questions in the study guide go beyond basic comprehension questions. While it is important to me that Ballerina understands the story on a surface level, I really appreciate the deeper, critical thinking questions offered by the study guide. These questions encouraged her to look at the themes of the book and apply them to her own life. Questions like should the 2 main characters surrender themselves for execution or or keep running and hiding, even if it means harming those who pursue them, gave us the opportunity to talk about moral issues. In fact, on that question, the study guide encouraged students to talk their answers over with their parents because it is a difficult question to answer.

The Cat of Bubastes has an incredible cast assembled to present this audio drama. Actors like Brian Blessed (Star Wars, Tarzan, and Robin Hood), Anthony Daniels (Star Wars), Elizabeth Counsell (The Chronicles of Narnia), and others provided quality voices to this great story.

I've also reviewed other titles from Heirloom Audio Productions in the past - In Freedom's Cause and With Lee in Virginia.
