Internship for High School Credit Review

One of the benefits of homeschooling is having the opportunity to customize each child's schooling. With the twins entering high school this year, I've been doing a lot of thinking about what I want them to achieve during their high school careers. When I heard about the resource Internship for High School Credit from Apologia Educational Ministries, I was definitely intrigued.

For this review, we received Internship for High School Credit: Practical Help to Explore and Direct Your Career Plans. This is a spiral-bound, 99-page book by Sherri Seligson.

Internship for High School Credit

I mentioned that I was intrigued when I heard about this book and the opportunity to review it. To be honest, the thought of an internship during high school, and especially the ability to earn high school credit for one, had never crossed my mind before. While there is still time during The Boy's senior year for us to find an opportunity for an internship, this isn't really an avenue we've pursued for him during his high school career, so my focus was on the twins while I was reading this book.

The book begins with an introduction that explains what an internship is and the benefits of interning as a high school student. One of the benefits that really spoke to me is that it provides an opportunity to explore potential career fields while still in high school. If more students did internships while in high school, the number of students who go to college with either no idea of what they want to do with their major or an idealized idea of what they want to do would probably be significantly lower.

The book is divided into five parts with parts one, three, four, and five written directly to students and part two written to parents. The author does encourage parents to read and participate in the entire process with the students, though. The five parts are
  • Getting Started - This section includes information about determining the type of internship, preparation, writing a resume and letter of introduction, and interviewing. It also includes sample resumes and letters of introduction.
  • Information for Parents - This section includes information about child labor laws, transcript documentation, course title and number, and grades.
  • First Semester - This section includes worksheets for establishing semester goals, documenting each week of the internship, midterm and end-of-semester performance, and skills gained.
  • Second Semester - This section includes more worksheets for those who are interning for more than one semester.
  • Course Wrap-Up - This section includes a final writing assignment, writing thank you notes, letter of recommendation, and updating resumes.
There was a lot of helpful information within this book that has me seriously considering helping my girls pursue internships during their high school careers. I love that it provided me with the knowledge of how to document an internship so that they can not only obtain important skills through the internship but also earn high school credit.

I truly believe that I was meant to review this book at this time. While I was reading, a job opportunity came open for me for a part time job with the soccer club where my children play and where I have been serving as registrar. It's been over 16 years since I've been in the work force and 19 years since I've needed a resume. The information in the book about creating a resume, especially about how to use volunteer experience in a resume, proved extremely useful as I was writing my resume for this job.

Apologia also has a great book and DVD out for those who are new to homeschooling or just want to refocus their energy again - How to Homeschool with Stunning Confidence, Contagious Joy, and Amazing Focus.
