Mayan Mysteries Review

Dig It! Games Review

My small people love anything electronic. I love anything that is educational. Whenever we can combine the two, it's definitely a win-win situation for all of us. While there are a plethora of computer games for preschool and elementary ages, sometimes finding educational games for middle school students can be difficult. Mayan Mysteries from Dig-It! Games is one of those rare gems, an educational computer game for middle-school students.
For this review, we received the Mayan Mysteries single player online game.

Dig It! Games Review

Mayan Mysteries is designed for students in grades 5 through 9. There are over nine hours of unique game play, although there is so much to learn and do, that we went a little slower giving us much more than 9 total hours of play. As indicated by the name, Mayan Mysteries is based on the history of the Mayan civilization, which was located in Central America and reached its peak between 250 and 900 A.D.

The premise of Mayan Mysteries is to stop the looter who has been digging up Mayan sites. There are 7 different sites to explore with over 25 puzzles to solve.

Ballerina is my resident history fanatic so she quite eagerly took over playing this game for this review.

After launching the game, you see a short video that gives an overview of the main characters and their quest. Then you are taken to a map of Central America, which contains the sites that you can explore. Once you choose a site to travel to, the next screen shows several characters from which you can choose. Some characters give you information to read about the Mayan culture, while others have games or excavations to complete.

After reading the selections about the Mayan culture, each selection has a few comprehension questions to answer. As a homeschooling mama, I love this feature. It's not just a game, but it has learning hidden in it. Ha ha!

For some of the excavations, you are shown a map while being given some history and geography about the region. Then you have to label the map, mark where natural resources were found, and shade regions that were discussed in the lesson, etc. Other excavations have you choose a tool and attempt to excavate an artifact. Your goal is to try to collect all of the artifacts throughout the game.

There are also achievements that players can earn by scoring 100% on the puzzles at each site, collecting all the artifacts, and completing all of the puzzles at the different sites.

For those of us who do not allow our children to spend 9 consecutive hours on the computer playing games, Mayan Mysteries allows the player to save their game so they can continue it the next time they play. It also gives you the option to start a new game when you return.

Ballerina has really enjoyed playing this game. She likes that it improved her knowledge about the history of the Mayan culture and the region of Central America. According to her, "you're learning, but in a fun way. It's not boring like listening to lectures."

We definitely are big fans of Mayan Mysteries and can't wait to try out other games from Dig-It! Games.
