Sunya - The Magic and Wonder of Math and Science Multiplying and Dividing Review

Learning math facts, especially multiplication facts, can often be boring rote memorization. For my kids, like most kids, that doesn't seem to be the best or easiest way to learn them. To help make practicing math facts fun, we've been playing a new card game from Sunya Publishing called Sunya - The Magic and Wonder of Math and Science Multiplying and Dividing.

Science Shepherd Introductory Science Level B Review

One of my favorite subjects that I get to teach is homeschool science. The variety of topics available to study under the umbrella of science means that there is something to interest any child. We've been learning a lot with our new science curriculum, Introductory Science Level B, from Science Shepherd.

D.E.A.R. Monday - May 23

Last Monday was my twins' birthday so Drop Everything And Read just didn't happen. I apologize.

It was also our last day of school. Now that we are on summer vacation, I am expecting much more time to Drop Everything And Read.

Crazy Busy Day

The girls had a track meet today. This year all 4 girls are competing for the track team. I've also stepped up to be a coach for race walk as well as the track club secretary.

In addition to watching the girls compete at their events, I also helped gather the other children and get them to their events and took pictures for the track club website.

According to my Fitbit, I walked over 22,000 steps today. I'm tired! LOL

I will share pictures and more from the meet in a few days.

The League and the Lantern Review and Giveaway

I'm always looking for good books for my tweens. It's really difficult to find books that are interesting and also age appropriate, especially for my book-loving Ballerina.

When we were asked to review Brian Wells' book The League and the Lantern, I couldn't wait to let Ballerina read it.

About the Author:
Brian Wells is a concerned dad who couldn't find quality entertainment for his children. He has worked on and produced 15 TV movies for major networks. The League and the Lantern is his book debut.

About the Book:
The League and the Lantern is the first book in a new adventure series for middle-school readers. It all starts when a dangerous organization invades Jake Herndon's seventh-grade sleepover. He escapes along with two new classmates, Lucy and TJ, only to face a 48-hour fight for survival on the streets of Chicago. The kids unravel a mystery dating back to the Civil War and an incredible secret about Jake's family. Along the way they learn unexpected lessons about courage, family, and friendship.

Our Thoughts:
The League and the Lantern is not only a good book for middle schoolers, it is also educational, containing 140 key vocabulary words hidden throughout the story as well as historic sites as part of the setting. Ballerina is a history fanatic, and she and I really liked the amount of history interwoven throughout the story. Another aspect of the story that I appreciated was the lessons in family, friendship, mercy, and compassion. As I said earlier, it's difficult to find books that I find appropriate for my tween girls; when I can find one that includes positive moral values, it makes me very happy.

Ballerina: "This book was very intriguing. I couldn't put it down because there was a lot of action and humor. The history included in it was also good. The ending was surprising and makes me want to read the next book in the series."

This adventure series is definitely one that your children will want to read.

You can find The League and the Lantern at the official website -

Not only was I given the opportunity to review The League and the Lantern, but I also get to give away a copy of the book to one of my lucky readers. Just enter the giveaway below for your chance to win.

The Pencil Grip, Inc. Kwik Stix 12 pk Review

My girls love to do craft projects. I'm not always a fan of letting them do these projects, though, because I hate the mess that is usually involved. I was extremely excited to try out Kwik Stix 12 pk, no mess kids' art supplies, from The Pencil Grip, Inc.

For this review, we received the Kwik Stix 12 pk. The Pencil Grip, Inc. was also kind enough to include an additional free sample single Kwik Stix in navy blue and an Original Pencil Grip.

Kwik Stix The Pencil Grip, Inc. Review
I mentioned earlier that I'm usually not a big fan of my girls and their arts and crafts projects. Art projects at my house usually involve someone wanting to paint, so out come the paper, brushes, paints, and cups of water. After art time is over, there are brushes and paint cups all over my kitchen counter in various stages of being clean and creative projects all over the dining room table so they can dry. Usually at some point, at least one of them have knocked over a water cup so that needs to be cleaned up as well. (Please tell me that doesn't only happen at my house.)

Let me contrast that with the art projects they created using the Kwik Stix. All they needed was paper and the Kwik Stix paint - no brushes, no cups of water. When they were done, they put the Kwik Stix away. The paint on their projects was already dry, so those weren't lying all over either. My stress level was at an all time crafting low! Ha ha!

About the Kwik Stix 12 pk
Kwik Stix are a solid tempera paint contained in a capped stick, almost like a glue stick. Like the name suggests, there are 12 colors included in this pack - white, pink, red, orange, yellow, light green, green, light blue, navy blue, purple, brown, and black. They are super easy to use; simply take the cap off, twist to raise the paint to a usable level, and paint. No brushes to clean, no water to be spilled all over the table. The paint dries in 90 seconds, so you don't have to leave wet paintings lying around all day either.

I noted that these are a solid tempera paint. I would equate the texture to the same texture as a tube of lipstick.

Our Thoughts and How We've Used Them
The girls were very excited to start using the Kwik Stix as soon as they arrived. Multiple art projects were created. I probably should buy stock in a company that sells construction paper since that has been their favorite paper on which to create their masterpieces.

My hubby is a varsity girls soccer coach at the local high school. Every year for Senior Night, my girls make posters for each of the senior players. Usually they use markers, but this year we used the Kwik Stix. The colors were much more vibrant than markers are. There were no "marker streaks" - you know, the visible marks showing the direction of color. The paints lasted longer than markers; usually by the end of poster making, the markers were losing ink so the color wasn't consistent. With the Kwik Stix paint, we didn't have that problem at all. The last posters made were just as vibrant as the first ones.

We had leftover posterboard so more signs were made. I definitely think Kwik Stix are a hit with my girls!

I have one wish - that these were also available in a thinner form so that they could be used to paint small details as well. I know my girls would find even more uses for them.

Kwik Stix are also available in classic colors 6 pk, neons 6 pk, and metalix 6pk. They also offer a 96-piece class set with 8 pieces of each of the 12 colors in the 12 pk. I think I might invest in the class set to use in my co-op class in the fall.
