SpeedyPrep Review

As hard as it is for me to believe, college is right around the corner for The Boy. Having to eventually pay for five children to attend college means that many discussions have been had about how to reduce the costs for us. One of those ways is for The Boy to try to earn college credit from home before he goes off to school. By taking CLEP exams, The Boy could potentially earn many of his general education requirement credits if he earns high enough scores. He has started working on College Algebra CLEP prep using SpeedyPrep.

For this review, we received six months of access to the SpeedyPrep online services, which includes access to all of their CLEP courses.

SpeedyPrep offers CLEP courses for twenty-four different subjects:

  • Biology
  • Natural Sciences
  • Introductory Business Law
  • Information Systems
  • Principles of Management
  • Principles of Marketing
  • Principles of Macroeconomics
  • Principles of Microeconomics
  • Spanish
  • American Government
  • US History I and II
  • Western Civilization I and II
  • Humanities
  • Analyzing and Interpreting Literature
  • American Literature
  • English Literature
  • College Composition
  • College Algebra
  • College Mathematics
  • Introductory Psychology
  • Introductory Sociology
  • Human Growth and Development
To start off, The Boy and I sat down and looked at the tremendous number of choices available to him. We decided that he would start with the College Algebra course. There were a couple of reasons behind our decision. The main one is that when he took the SAT last fall, his math score wasn't quite as high as he would have liked. We hoped that through the review of the math concepts in the College Algebra course that, not only would he be able to pass the CLEP test to earn the college credit, but also raise the math score on his SAT next month.

When he starts a College Algebra study session, he is able to choose what section of information he wants to work on during that session. He can choose to work on one section, several sections, or even all the sections during a session. There are twenty sections, which include:
  • Absolute Value Equations and Inequalities
  • Algebraic Expressions
  • Complex Numbers
  • Domain and Range
  • Factoring
  • Inverse Functions
  • Linear Equations and Inequalities
  • Logarithms
  • Quadratic Equations and Inequalities
  • Real Numbers
  • Systems of Equations
The sessions are set up as a series of flashcard questions. Each question is either fill in the blank, true or false, or multiple choice. For each multiple choice question, there are four to five choices to pick from. Usually one of the incorrect choices is either very close to the correct answer or an answer that could be gotten to by using an incorrect formula. This has helped The Boy to really have to learn what formula to use with each type of question.

Whenever he gets a problem correct, the course gives him the reason explaining why that answer was the correct one.

If he misses a problem, it gives him the reason why his answer was incorrect and how he should have gotten to the correct answer.

The program also allows him to see his progress for each type of question.

The Boy feels much more confident about doing better on the math portion of the SAT as well as earning college credit by taking the College Algebra CLEP test because of using the SpeedyPrep course.
