Captain Bayley's Heir Review

With all of the traveling that we do for soccer, track, and cross country, we spend a lot of time in the car - and I mean A LOT! Just a couple of weekends ago, The Boy had a soccer game in a town about an hour and a half west of where we live. After his game, we left and drove an additional hour west to go to a cross country meet for Sassy. That evening, we had to drive the two and a half hours back home. One way we occupy ourselves during these trips is listening to audio books. One of the latest audio dramas we've listened to is G.A. Henty's Captain Bayley's Heir from Heirloom Audio Productions.

Captain Bayley's Heir

For this review, we received
  • Captain Bayley's Heir 2-CD audio theater
  • An account on Heirloom Audio Productions Live the Adventure Club site, which gives us access to a ton of downloadable bonus features (I'll talk more about those later.)
We've been blessed in the past with being able to review other Heirloom Audio Productions audio dramas, like The Cat of Bubastes, With Lee in Virginia, and In Freedom's Cause.

First, I'm going to share about Captain Bayley's Heir audio theater. One of the reasons I love these audio dramas is that the cast does such a good job bringing the book to life. Captain Bayley's Heir takes the listener into both Victorian England and the California gold rush. We enjoyed listening to the action as Frank and his friends get into a scuffle with some boys from town and to the storytelling of the various characters, like when Mrs. Hall tells Frank the story of how she and her husband came to adopt Harry.

One reason I believe that Captain Bayley's Heir comes to life so easily through the audio drama is that Heirloom Audio Productions chooses amazing actors and actresses for their cast. Some of the main characters in Captain Bayley's Heir are voiced by Brian Blessed from Star Wars and Tarzan, John Rhys-Davies from The Lord of the Rings and Indiana Jones, Jade Williams from The Royal Shakespearian Company, Ian Porter from Saving Private Ryan, Finty Williams from The Importance of Being Earnest, and David Shaw Parker from The Muppet Christmas Carol.

Now, let me share with you about the Live the Adventure Club account. There are so many amazing bonus features available there. I definitely recommend that one joins the adventure club if they are purchasing the audio books. Some of the downloadable features there include:
  • An e-book with colorful graphics
  • The official soundtrack in an MP3 download
  • A printable cast poster
  • A study guide and discussion starter (I'll share even more about this in a minute.)
  • An inspirational hymn poster with a line from Amazing Grace
  • Downloadable desktop wallpaper for your computer
The study guide and discussion starter is a great way for me to take listening to the audio dramas and incorporate them easily into our homeschool. The study guide is broken up by tracks and includes comprehension questions, vocabulary words, and critical thinking questions for each track. Some of the critical thinking questions include having my children look up areas on a map so they can better comprehend where the story is taking place, converting money from an amount in history to what the equivalent would be today, and coming up with opinions on why women didn't stand beside the men during fights.

Throughout the study guide, there are also sections called "Expand Your Learning," where more information is given about subjects, like the origin of the phrase "Manifest Destiny" and details of traveling to California by water during the Gold Rush.

The study guide also contains a list of other sources about Victorian England and the American West, as well as three Bible studies - one on God's Grace, one on Becoming a Christian, and one on Honoring Your Parents.
