Gr 7 Lightning Lit Set Review

When I look back on my junior high and high school days, the classes that stand out the most in my mind as the most loved are my literature classes. My English teachers introduced me to classics as well as to books I would probably have never picked up on my own. I feel like it's because of this that I enjoy a variety of genres in my reading life today. It's extremely important to me that my own children get a solid foundation in literature and that I find a curriculum that will help me to accomplish this. I was delighted that Brittany and I have had the opportunity to review the Gr 7 Lightning Lit Set from Hewitt Homeschooling Resources.

For this review, we received the Grade 7 Lightning Lit & Comp: Preparing for High School Composition Skills by Responding to Great Literature set which includes
  • Seventh Grade Literature & Composition Student's Guide - This is a 145-page soft-bound book that provides the basis for instruction. For each assigned piece of literature, there is an introduction giving background on the author, "While You Read" items to focus on during the assigned reading, vocabulary lists, comprehension questions, a literary lesson focusing on different literary elements, a mini-lesson on a writing element, and a writing exercise.
  • Seventh Grade Literature & Composition Workbook - This is a 162-page, consumable soft-bound book. The workbook pages provide practice exercises based on the literature reading as well as the literary and writing lessons in the student's guide. For example, the literary lesson for the first piece of literature, "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi," is on plot line. The workbook gave Brittany practice identifying the plot line in another reading passage. There are also some fun activities like a crossword puzzle and word search puzzle for each piece of literature.
  • Seventh Grade Literature & Composition Teacher's Guide - This is a 105-page soft-bound book that provides suggestions for how to use the various elements of the lessons in the student's guide, a weekly planning schedule, answers to the workbook page assignments, and discussion questions for each piece of literature.
The literature pieces studied in the Grade 7 Lightning Lit set include The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, several poems from Stories & Poems for Extremely Intelligent Children, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, The Story of My Life by Helen Keller, and All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriott.

During the time of our review, Brittany was able to complete the section for "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" by Rudyard Kipling and completed about half of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. We used the Weekly Planning Schedule from the teacher's guide to help plan what she needed to do each week. I thoroughly appreciate curriculum that helps me with planning! This is set up with how much should be completed in a week, so for me, I allowed her to work on as much as she wanted each day as long as the week's work was completed by Friday. I think managing her time and assignments are important skills for her to learn in preparation for college.

I have fallen in love with Lightning Lit, and this has definitely been an answer to my prayers about what I was going to have Brittany use for literature in junior high. In addition to reading quality literature, the literary lessons and writing lessons will give her a solid foundation in many skills, including plot line, poetry and rhyme, dialogue, autobiography, character sketch, writing from note cards, fact and opinion, and much more.

Brittany's Thoughts
I like that I get to read different types of books. My favorite activity so far was creating the storyboard for "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi."
